I'm doing my own little thing

Right before Christmas, my mom cleaned out an old jewelry box and gave me a handful of rings she found. Most of them were Masonic rings that belonged to my paternal grandmother. I have a bit of a history with her Masonic rings, as I found one randomly when I was in high school, took it, and wore it for years until a stranger yelled at me about how inappropriate it was. (He was wrong, by the way.)

ANYWAY. I just finally got a chance to sort them out last night and found a gold wedding band in the pile. I wasn't sure what it was, so I emailed my mom. She just sent back a note explaining how it was a band she wore for about ten years. When I was in elementary school, she lost the (tiny) diamond out of her original band while doing yard work. So, she replaced it with a plain band that she wore until her 35th wedding anniversary, when Dad replaced it with a diamond the size of an asteroid.

ANYWAY AGAIN. Longest story ever, but it really touched me that Mom wanted me to have that band. I'm feeling very loved and sentimental this morning. *wipes tears*

In completely unrelated news, today is the day the temperatures drop down into the teens! I'm dreading it but have dressed warm and plan to just stay inside, or in my car, as much as possible.

I am beset with static cling! GO AWAY STATIC CLING. Someone in an LJ forum recently taught me to put the tiiiiiniest bit of moisturizer on my hands and rub it on the ends of my hair. That deals with hair static, spit-spot. But clothes static? BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. Any tips from you guys on banishing it? My coat is especially bad.

[info]annkiri went home yesterday and Max is in mourning. He slept on the floor all night long in silent protest. Poor baby.

Have I posted about the saga with my mattress? I bought a new one a few years ago and have hated it since the day it was delivered. I finally decided it was just too saggy and filed a warranty claim. Which the company denied. Four months and countless pissy emails and phone calls later, my new (free) mattress is being delivered on Saturday. Hopefully this one will work out better for me. SIGH. This is one of those "being an adult is hard"-things, you know?

Speaking of! It's time to leave for work! Have an awesome Thursday babies. Stay warm and make someone else smile. MWAH!

Aww. That's so lovely your mum gave you that ring. MUMS ARE AWESOME. :)

Stay warm lovely!

Static cling help: put some cold water on your hands - just dampen them - and run over what is clingy. You can also try a blast of hairspray.

Worse case scenario - travel size can of Static Guard is so very worth the $$$. One for your office, car and house! (disclaimer: I make no profit off this recommendation. Really!)

HMMM! I will try the water first and see. Part of my problem is that I get dressed half asleep and then I'm at work when I notice the problem...no hairspray there. SIGH. Planning ahead is HARD. *grin*

Thanks T!

Definitely used to grab a dryer sheet and run it over my clothes before I left the house - worked for static cling for me!

This is a brilliant idea. Thanks!

I used to do dryer sheets, but sometimes there was a weird texture rubbing off. I dunno. They do have aerosol cans of static guard!

Also? The wedding ring story is adorable. My grandmother left her diamond ring behind and my aunt has been saving it to leave for me, since we're the only women on that side of the family. I think it's really touching to have the hand-me-downs from family.

I really love the ring thing too. When my brother got engaged, he used the diamond from my paternal grandmother's ring. I know that's part of why mom wanted me to have her band, and I'll have her big diamond some day too (which, uhhh, feels morbid to write out. I'd rather have my mom. ANYWAY.)

My sentimental side is out in full force at the moment!

When my beloved Grama's finger's began to swell with age she had her wedding band cut off and repaired. She gave it to me and it is my most treasured possession. I wear it on my right hand ring finger (which has confused several people lemme tell ya!) So I completely understand what you mean.

*nodnod*

I wear a turquoise ring from my paternal grandmother on my left hand and a ring belonging to my maternal grandmother on my right hand. They make me feel grounded, when I look at them. Like my family always is with me. That sounds sooooo sappy written down, but it's true!

Awww, that's so sweet! And awesome that your dad gave her a diamond for the 35th anniversary. ♥

WENDY I DON'T WANT IT. I sat in my car this morning trying to get the ice off my windshield so I could drive. Can I borrow the puppies to cuddle with? ;)

Awww, poor Max. I completely understand him. :D

The puppies would looooove some Rona-cuddle-time! :)

Stupid cold. *kicks it* I want my Texas weather back!

Static cling is quite bad. I got shocked REALLY HARD yesterday. It traveled all the way up my ear bud into my ear. It really hurt.

[info]wendy

January 8 2010, 15:18:12 UTC 2 years ago

YIKES. I admit I've gotten some HUGE shocks when I get out of my car at night too. It's really not fun.

January 7 2010, 17:55:06 UTC 2 years ago

Oh man, yeah, we're so static ridden at work that they're trying to raise the humidity inside so you don't shock yourself just walking between cubes and touching someone. Not a fan.

In completely unrelated news, today is the day the temperatures drop down into the teens!

On the flip side, for me, it warmed up (!) into the teens! Which then promptly means we're in the middle of getting 4-6 inches of snow. :[ Time for me to move back south!

I do not know, but I do not like it!

The ring thing still is making me happy. :)

Sometimes rubbing my clothes with a dryer sheet helps.
A thorough smoothing of lotion under the clothes also helps.

January 8 2010, 15:21:42 UTC 2 years ago

Lotion first is a good idea! Will try, thanks Michelle!

Well you've got the static part covered. For your coat I'd say the static guard, lasts longer and you can carry a small can with you. Also you may want to consider covering your driver seat with a cotton sheet (or cotton cover) - you build up a lot of static between the coat and seat while driving. It's one reason you tend to get a shock when your feet touch the ground and you close the door *ouch*

How was the man who yelled at you wrong? I ask because I had someone scream at me (I mean that literally, a customer called security on him) because I was wearing my grandfather's Masonic pin on my name tag. I did take it off so as not to offend anyone else, but I was really confused.

[info]wendy

January 8 2010, 15:34:09 UTC 2 years ago

My uncle, who also is a mason, said it's fine to wear family masonic jewelry in honor of a loved one. Just that you needed to be clear you aren't the mason, if asked. I did some light internet research and there doesn't seem to be a rule for or against wearing family stuff, though most people feel strongly one way or another.

I don't wear her stuff anymore, but if I wanted to, I would.

A shot of hairspray seems to do the trick on clothes. But also be careful when you're drying clothes in the clothes dryer not to OVER dry them. If you take the clingy-prone garments out just before they're dry and hang them up, they seem to respond lots better. Not sure why!

[info]wendy

January 8 2010, 15:31:43 UTC 2 years ago

Weirdly, I hang and air dry almost all of my clothes, so that part isn't a solution. (I kept reading your exact advice on the internet too!)

But I will pay better attention to the hairspray trick, which I haven't tried yet. Thanks Greta!

You were in middle school when your mom lost that diamond because I remember that!

Also, your mom is a sweetheart.

*is cold*

[info]wendy

January 8 2010, 15:27:19 UTC 2 years ago

Nope, she lost it at our Burleson house, I was in the fifth grade. Mom was pulling honeysuckle off the fence and stuffing it into garbage bags. It's possible that she replaced it when we lived in Joshua though, I don't remember that part!

Mom is kinda awesome. I love her a lot!

More hair-static help: If you wear hats (I do all the time in the winter) tuck an unscented dryer sheet up inside it. Works like a charm! :) They make the spray-can no static stuff, but beyond that, I got nothin'.

YOU ARE NO HELP TO ME! Just kiding. Dryer sheets and static guard, got it!

that was so cool of your mom to give you that wedding band! I have my fathers and wish it fit me.

Could you have it resized? Or made into another ring that does fit you?

January 11 2010, 02:51:36 UTC 2 years ago

I have a pair of fleece pj pants and I had to quit wearing them b/c the static buildup was so awful that when I pulled them off there were SPARKS.

January 11 2010, 03:23:25 UTC 2 years ago

EEP. I will admit that the other night Max was rubbing his face on my bedspread in the middle of the night and I saw sparks. Freaked me out, but he didn't seem to mind a bit.
